Gear For Century Rides

For all of those individuals that are unaware of what a “century” bike ride is exactly, it is a well-respected one hundred mile trip, that is normally done with wonderful scenery and exciting camaraderie. In order to fully enjoy the century bike ride, and not have thighs that are severely burning, a sore butt, and aching shoulders the last fifty miles, here are some really great training tips for you to take into consideration when preparing for the century bike ride, in order to get into shape. However, before we get to all of that, let’s talk a little about the required gear for century rides.

First off, you are going to need a bike that has twelve to twenty one gears, and a helmet. Secondly, you are going to need some spare inner tubes, a patch kit, and some tire irons. You will also need Co2 cartridges, and a portable pump, accompanied by a camelback or water bottles. In addition to all of these things, a rear-view mirror, some padded bike shorts, a rain jacket, sunscreen and a bike computer that is used for measuring the mph and miles are also considered to be part of the required gear for century rides.

Now that you know about all of the gear for century rides that you will need, it is time to discuss how to train for century rides:

Obviously, you are going to need to possess a decent bike, that has a minimum of twelve to twenty one gears, twenty one gears are a lot better. You are going to want all of those gears just in case you run into rain, high wind, and steep hills.

Take a little time and visit the bike store so that you can have yourself “fitted” to your bike. All of the employees there will make sure that the seat on the bike is at the proper height for your correct leg extension and that all of the handlebars are at the appropriate distance also. You are going to be participating in so much training that you aren’t going to want any type of back, knee, or shoulder problems to come up.

Take the time to become a member of a bike group or get a couple of buddies together that are interested in training. In the event that you are planning to do this by yourself, you should know that all of the miles that you are traveling are going to be lonely if you are all alone. You can check with all of the local bike ships because they are aware of individuals that are training.

Create a base of being comfortably able to ride twenty fives miles at a time, however you should know that it is going to take you several weeks to reach this point. This is going to provide you with ample amount of time to know whether or not you truly want to attempt the century ride.

It is from this base that you are going to start your official training: For the following three months, you are going to need to ride at least ten to fifteen miles during the week. You may choose to do it before work, once you have gotten off of work, or even on your way to work. On the weekends, you are going to do all of your longer riding.

Now that you know about the required gear for century rides and you know the first five steps of training, you are ready to begin preparing yourself for the century ride.
